Over the past few weeks seniors all across the country have taken that next step and graduated from colleges and universities. Each year, this brings a whole new population into the work force. Many questions are sure to enter their minds, such as where to apply, what to expect, and how to prepare for their first entre into the “real world”. Many find this a daunting challenge and don’t know where to start.
The first step in securing a position after college is to have a well written resume. It may seem at times difficult to land that first job, but with a pertinent and well written resume it will be easier to get your foot in the door. It is important to make sure your previous responsibilities and skills are clearly stated; a hiring manager may be looking for something specific, and you may have it! Also, your resume should be in a clear format and simple for the hiring manager to read, these are a few resume rules every senior should remember.
Another important tip is to make sure you network and take advantage of any connection you may have. If you know someone with a job at a Public Relations company and you are interested in PR, contact that person even if no jobs are open at the time. Most people will meet with you for an informative interview, and when a job opens up they may think of you for it. Using an alumni network can also be helpful for connecting with professionals in your desired field; most people are more than happy to help out fellow alumni. Additionally, it is important to keep your profile on LinkedIn up to date, as well as let friends and family know what you are looking for; often someone you know will know someone who may be able to help you out.
Working with job staffing agencies or recruiters can also be a helpful tool. They can help you find the job that is right for your credentials and for your experience, and there is no fee attached! There is also the opportunity to do temporary work while you are looking for a permanent fit which enhances your skills and exposure. Staffing companies can work with you to find a temporary job that can turn into a permanent job and can also keep searching for a permanent job for you while you are temping. Many recent college graduates may not think a staffing agency is for them, but it can often provide them with opportunities that they may have not been able to find on their own.
