College Grads: What to Do When there is No Career Crystal Ball

COLLEGE GRADS- no career crtycal

You’re graduating. Congratulations! There are so many opportunities out there for you to pursue. Despite all of the choices, the reality is you’re not sure what to do with the rest of your life. Rather than being anxious about your career path, embrace the luxury of having so many choices.  In fact, take advantage of this early position in your career – and leave the door open for the many great jobs that will present themselves in the weeks, months and years ahead!

One way to jump start your exploration of different jobs is through temping. If you’ve never done it before, don’t be intimidated. With temping, you can:

  • Test a certain field or position to see if it is the right fit. If you stay in the field, you will have gained some great experience. If you are not interested in the field, at least you have given it a try and aren’t locked into it long term.
  • Choose from a variety of employment structures: short-term, long-term, temp-to-perm, etc., as well as experience different work cultures. You may think you want something more casual, when in fact you perform better with some structure. Temping gives you the option to explore multiple scenarios to determine what you like best.
  • Meet different types of people and learn new skills that may fuel interest and opportunities in a particular job path moving forward.
  • Gain valuable insight from staffing firm consultants who can help you better understand your strengths and where you may fit industry and job-wise.

The reality is, every career path varies greatly. It’s very common for someone to start in one particular industry and end up in something entirely different. The important thing is to be open and honest with yourself, while keeping your eyes wide open to all of the possibilities out there. By taking this approach, you are not only putting yourself on a path to find a great job, but you will likely have fun doing it.
